Pyott Cup

Pyott Cup 2024: Uniondale Hosts, Willowmore Roasts (But We Still Had More Fun!)

On 13 September, the hallowed fairways of Uniondale Golf Club became the battlefield for South Africa’s longest-running golf competition, the legendary Pyott Cup. With history on the line, egos at stake, and plenty of snacks to keep spirits (and sugar levels) up, 12 brave Uniondale golfers faced off against 12 visiting rivals from Willowmore in a day full of swings, slices, and suspiciously confident putting.

The day began in style — coffee and rusks welcomed early risers, though some players looked like they needed something a bit stronger in their cups. As the sun climbed, so did the tension (and the rough scores), but luckily so did the snacks, lunch, and later, a delicious dinner that reminded us all why we love this club, even if our drives end up in the next fairway.

Uniondale’s team played with heart, determination, and just enough skill to keep it interesting… but alas, the Pyott Cup will sleep in Willowmore this year. Congratulations to our Willowmore guests – you played well and were annoyingly polite about it too.

But let’s be honest – while Willowmore may have taken the Cup, Uniondale took the vibe. The laughter, the camaraderie, the hospitality, and the high-quality snacking made it a day to remember. Besides, as every golfer knows: some days you win, some days you just look really good losing.

Huge thanks to everyone who made the day possible – from those who prepared the meals to those who “prepared” their golf games the night before at the bar. The Pyott Cup lives on, and so does the fierce (but friendly!) rivalry between our two great clubs.

See you next year — with sharper swings and bigger appetites.
